The Starfleet Basic Training Course was established in 2140, originally five weeks in length, before expanding to seven weeks in 2141. New classes are held every nine weeks. In April 2142, the Basic Training Course was merged with the short-lived General Rate Training to provide both basic and rate training in a one combined instruction. The course is designed to provide basic drill training, knowledge on Starfleet organization and procedures, as well as initial weapons and maintenance qualification.

Starfleet Basic Training is divided into three phases, beginning with Alpha Phase where Starfleet recruits are instructed in basic drill and Starfleet knowledge. The subsequent Delta Phase is focused on recruits obtain the mandatory qualifications as well as basic education in Starfleet's mission of scientific discovery and exploration. At the end of Delta phase, the Starfleet recruit is assigned a designator and advanced to pre-rate training where they are issued division as coloring for their uniforms. Upon graduation from Starfleet Basic Training, teh Recruit is promoted to Crewman and issued their first assignment orders.
Structure of Starfleet Basic Training. Recruits are organized into three companies which advance separately through the phases of the basic training. Recruits failing to perform may be "rolled back" to a company in an earlier training phase. The Executive Officer of the Starfleet Crewman School serves as Commander of Basic Training.
