STARFLEET UNIFORMS AND INSIGNIA
Starfleet uniforms consist of a standard duty jumpsuit worn by all personnel, with a more formal office uniform worn by flag officers. Rank insignia is displaced on the right shoulder (both shoulders for flag officers) with division color pipping worn across the shoulders.

Flag Officer Insignia
Flag officer uniforms were created in 2136, originally as a more formal version of the Starfleet uniform with black coat, tie, and rank pips worn on either collar of the duty jacket. By 2140, the rank pips were now displayed on the front shoulder lapels. Sleeve stripes were first introduced in 2142.

Crewman and Training Insignia
The rank of Crewman was first established in 2137 and was denoted by the standard Starfleet uniform with no insignia. In 2145, the meritorious rank of Senior Crewman was introduced, identified by a small Starfleet crest worn on the right shoulder tab in the same manner as commissioned officer insignia.

Training ranks were first created in August 2139 pending the formal opening of the Starfleet Training Center. The rank of Recruit was the first such rank, originally denoted by a plain purple colored jumpsuit and worn by Starfleet personnel in Basic Training.
Original recruit uniform
As of the 2140s, all personnel in a recruit or trainee status, including Officer Candidates, wear a standard Starfleet uniform with no insignia or divisional piping. Second-tier Officer Candidates attending Starfleet Officer School additionally wear uniforms with white divisional piping. Standard divisional colors are issued upon selection of a rate or officer designator.

The Starfleet desert uniform was created in 2141 specifically for students assigned to the Starfleet Training Station in Alice Springs, Australia. In 2143, a standard-issue cold weather excursion jacket was also introduced for use by Starfleet.
