Mod 1 Communicator
Personnel operating a portable communicator must qualify as a Personal Communicator Operator. An additional repair license is required for personnel who preform maintenance on hand held communicators
The Starfleet Communications Office was created in October 2141, per Starfleet Operations Directive #34 and is located in Starfleet Headquarters. The office's main function is to research and develop space communication-based systems for use on Starfleet space vessels. In May 2147, the Starfleet Communications Office was responsible for implementing the Linguacode Translation Matrix into all Starfleet communications systems, allow for near instantaneous translation of most alien language forms. the first portable handheld communicator was introduced in October 2149.
COMMUNICATIONS RATINGS
Starfleet Communications ratings were established by Starfleet Operations Directive #77 in October 2149 and provide the qualification standards for Starfleet personnel to operate both standard and portable communications equipment. Communications ratings are determined by completion of the Communications Systems Rating Examination.
LEVEL ONE:
Basic communications rating required by all Starfleet personnel to operate communications equipment
LEVEL TWO:
Required by Communications Officers and Starfleet Crewman in the rate of Radioman
LEVEL THREE:
Advanced rating required by Communications research personnel and some specialized Communications assignment billets
