Earth is the third planet of the Sol star system and the homeworld of the human race.  While the history of Earth is marked mainly by strife and conflict, within the past century the planet has seen a golden age of peace and prosperity. After suffering three devastating world wars in the twentieth and twenty first centuries, Earth achieved warp drive in 2063 which was followed by a remarkable period of recovery, and by the mid twenty second century the planet had achieved a near utopian society and global unity.

The United Earth government is the primary governing agency of the planet, although a small number of independent countries remain as sovereign states.  The United Earth Bureau of Colonization oversees colony outposts on Mars and Luna as well as a scientific outpost on the Jovian moon of Europa and a military outpost on Titan.

As of 2135, there were eleven nations which had not joined the United Earth government.  Of those, six had passed resolutions for membership which were in the process of being ratified by their respective national legislatures.

The United Earth Military, which includes the Military Assault Command Operations (MACO), is the primary defensive force for the planet, although individual nations may also maintain armed forces for home guard service.  Earth also hosts several orbital facilities, operated jointly by UESPA and the Earth Cargo Service.

Diplomatically, Earth maintains both trade and scientific treaties with Vulcan, including the controversial "Treaty for Scientific Permission" in which Vulcan offered to provide scientific assistance concerning warp flight tests in exchange for Earth curtailing its warp program and proceeding only with Vulcan approval.
