Alpha Centauri III was founded in 2114 by a mixture of European colonists of the European Hegemony as well as a scientific research team from Earth affiliated with the Warp Five research complex in Bozeman, Montana.

Also known as the “Centauri Colony”, Alpha Centauri was directly controlled by the United Earth Bureau of Colonization until 2145 when the planet was declared nominally independent as an Earth Protectorate. The Alpha Centauri star system is an important waypoint for the Earth Cargo Service, with the space station “Port Centauri” operating as a cargo transfer point and for Earth spaceships. A small scientific team also inhabits the station to monitor the pre-warp civilization on the nearby planet Al-Rijil.
Alpha Centauri is most famous for being the last known location of Zephram Cochrane, the inventor of the space warp drive, before the eighty-seven year old scientist disappeared in 2119. Cochrane had traveled to Alpha Centauri stating he wished to retire there, however a month later piloted a one-man experimental craft, rumored to be equipped with an early prototype of a warp five engine, out of the Centauri system into unexplored space. He was declared missing six months later and declared dead in 2123.
