Rigel X is a major trading outpost of the Rigel Consortium, located at the edge of the habitable zone of the Beta Rigel star system. The planet is the location of all major imports and exports into and out of the Rigel system.

The trading outpost on Rigel X was founded in the early 1900s and was the original spaceport for all merchant ships traveling to and from Beta Rigel from Vulcan. Other than its strategic position on a space lane into Beta Rigel, the planet has little more to offer and is essentially a frozen wasteland. Native life consists mostly of insects with some larger animals adapted to the cold who inhabit the planet’s ice fields and tundra plains.
Rigel X is officially a colony of the Rigelian Trade Consortium, however in practice the trading outpost runs its own affairs. The local government is centered upon a large multi-story trading complex with few laws and little regulation, although some statutes, such as provisions against importing weapons and narcotics, are strictly enforced. A small police force maintains order with most of the serious crime solved by deporting the offenders. In more recent years, the presence of the Orion Syndicate, using Rigel X as a hub for criminal enterprises, has made the trading station more dangerous.
